Metropolitan Tikhon Visits the Archive

During the 2015 St. Herman Pilgrimage, Metropolitan Tikhon, Bishop David (Bishop of Sitka and Alaska), and Bishop Daniel (Bishop of Santa Rosa) visited the Diocesan Archive at St Herman Seminary. The hierarchs were given an extended tour by the Seminary Archivist, Daria Safronova-Simeonoff, and shown the letters of St. Innocent of Alaska and the log-journals of St. Yakov Netsvetov. Vladyka Tikhon was especially impressed with the oldest artifact of our collection, a 1697 Menaion that arrived in Kodiak with the first Russian Orthodox Mission to Alaska.

French Researchers Visit the Archive

Two French researchers, Marie-Amélie Salabelle and Virginie Vaté, stayed at the Seminary during the Pilgrimage. Before arriving in Kodiak, they spent some time researching Orthodoxy in the Aleutians (Marie) and in Chukotka (Virginie). Listen to their stories.

Missionary Travelogues

Dawn Lea Black and St. Herman Seminary archivist Daria Safronova-Simeonoff started this project of translating “Kodiak Area Orthodox Priests’ and Missionaries’ Letters and Travelogues from the 19th and 20th Centuries" and will be publishing here on the Seminary website. The never-before translated journals tell of Orthodox Missionaries' journies around Kodiak in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
